I've broken the original sentence down into parts and analyzed each part:
Minghella's firm -- business, store
persuades viewers -- tries to get people who watch to be on their side
to root for -- or cheer, support with applause, clapping, donations, etc.
a sociopathic killer -- or someone who murders without feeling
ingenious -- highly creative
escape from the consequences of his actions -- not wanting to take responsibility, wanting to do something and get away with it
Basically, the film wants viewers to do something they would not normally do: to be on the side of a killer, to see that the way the killer acts is inventive and clever, and to understand why the killer escapes without any responsibility, condemnation or sentence.
Thanks and cheers, K

I would say that it is saying the Minghella's film is causing us to cheer for killer's very intelligent plan to escape the consequences of his actions. So the word root just means we are cheering for the killer.

read this poem isn't it double My First Time The sky was dark The moon was high The wind did fade All alone, she and I Her hair was soft Her eyes were blue I knew just what She wanted to do Her skin so soft Her legs so fine I ran my fingers Down her spine I didn't know how But I tried my best I started by placing My hands on her breast I remember my fear My fast beating heart But slowly she spread Her long legs apart And when I did it I felt no shame As all at once The white stuff came At last it's finished Yes, all over now My first time ever At milking a cow.

to root for something is to express encouragement, or cheer encouragingly, for something. For example, during a sporting event, fans root for a team by shouting, "Go team!" or "Come on, team!" to encourage their success. .
