I just got this old computer from my uncle and i believe it's 6-8 year olds.... i don't know what kind of motherboard it has but as right now, it is supporting Pentium 4 cpu with 1.60GHz, and it has 256MB of RAM (still have 3 more slot to put in)... How do i check if this computer can support a stronger cpu, ram, or video card? I wanna put maybe a 3.0GHz, and maybe 1gb ram, and 256mb video card.

if that computer is about that old. i suggest for you to get everything new and rebuild it yourself. that motherboard sounds like its max cpu is 1.8ghz with about 512mb or 1gb RAM. not much you can really do with something as old as that.

Yes, most certainly. For your specific computer, the most RAM that it can support is 2gb, right now it most likely has 256mb, which is quite low by today's standards. It supports DDR 333 (PC 2700) and DDR 400 (PC 3200). It will not be able to use DDR2 or DDR3. The most effective thing you could do would be to buy 2 1gb sticks of DDR 400 RAM. That should run you about $60-$80 USD. You'll also want to be sure to purchase two identical RAM modules, if you do get more than one. Usually they come in what is called 'dual channel kits', which means it's 2 of them in a package, that are exactly alike. And more importantly; (Technical) They run on two channels, potentially doubling the communication speed. Oh, and as a side note, for performance, you'll want a lower "CAS" rating, the average is 3, but you can find 2.5 or 2.

Open it up and look inside (sounds like you already did).

Note details, like mainboard name and model. Go into BIOS and note the same things. Then research on Internet, find the maker and their webpage on your board, and that'll tell you the upgrade limits.

As Pentium 4 first came out in 2000, a 1.6 GHz P4 would be right around 6.5-7 yrs old.

well, you can use software like cpu-z or sisoft sandra or everest to check what motherboard and procesor you got ( use google or search in downloads.com)

although i bet you have something like pentium 4 with socket 423 or 478, ddr ram ( or RDRAM if you got socket 423) mothervoard with chipset intel i845 or i850. and an AGP graphic card.

you can upgrade your old pc, but dont expect to get new parts ( most of those technology have been abandoned and replaced with new one) but you can still search if someone sold them.
