Hurray for all those who voted for "a lot"! I am a 4th grade teacher and have to teach this as part of the spelling curriculum. There is no such word as "alot" - it doesn't exist. People who spell it that way drive me nutty! It is also why a RED line appears underneath it here on Yahoo Answers when you spell it that way! Spell check told all the dingy people here who spelled it wrong it was wrong ... and THEY still answered that it was the correct way to spell it!
And to think some of these people drive cars and have jobs. Good lord!

I learned it as alot, but the Answer spell check recognizes it as a lot. So, a lot it is.

I spell it like "a lot" because my teacher said that's the correct way.

Thos are two different words.
A Lot indicates a large quantity of something. I have a lot of junk email.
Allot means set aside basically. I have had to allot extra space in my inbox for the junk email I get.
So, it depends on what you're trying to say!

a lot = like a parking lot
alot is spell checked into allot
