It started because both nations could not agree on extending or renewing the treaty which governed use of the Sha'at Al Arab, the waterway at the north end of the Gulf. It ended after both nations took enormous losses to both their military forces and they decided to enter into a peace agreement.
Shah Raza Palavi was not involved since he had already been overthrown and removed from power by Ayatollah Kohmeni. Iraq was fighting the Islamic Republic of Iran, not the Kingdom of Iran.

Iraq is much smaller of a country comparing to Iran and had only 1/4 of the population in 1980 of Iran so it does not make sense that saddam was the aggressor but more so the defender ! Khomeini had a personal hate towards saddam after spending 15 years in Iraq , Khomeini is an evil and will burn in hell

Well, Saddam, the leader of Iraq was always expecting a chance to attack Iran....in the time of Iran's empire (the last king) he couldn't ever threat Iran...cause Iran was supported by the US power. but after the Islamic revolution happened he found it the BEST chance to attack Iran..cuz there were lots of civil wars with different groups in Iran. and iran was the most dependet....and just had spoiled it's connection with the US...so Saddam had the US (which means the world)'s support...so why did he have to wait? and the river (shatal arab) thing is just sth silly to say; this wasn't the main reason...Saddam claimed big lands in Iran; to extend Iraq. So he attacked. he thought he'll reach Tehran (the capital) in 3 days...that he couldn't get to Tehran even after 8 years. in the Initial days he was just doing so successfully cuz of the weakened betrayer present governor....but the governer was fired and the leader of Iran (Imam Khomeini) commanded (called for a Jihad) to defend...so all the ppl from allover Iran went to defend....they were just simple ppl but they did great and could conquer Iraqis. so the war finished after 8 years with a peace agreement.
I hope this was enough....ask for more if you want to know ;)
