Because a long time ago, someone in England called it soccer to avoid it getting confused with rugby football. And then someone in Australia called it soccer to avoid getting it confused with Aussie Rules football. And then someone in Ireland called it soccer to avoid it getting confused with Gaelic football.
Sure football makes more sense but it gets called soccer to avoid confusion all over the world.

because they want to be different...and they already call a "a fake version of rugby" football...im guessing they did not think when they started calling it football in america because its not played with feet... maybe they just wanted to have a sport like everyone else in the world has futball, so they just named it football too.... the word soccer comes from the word association in which the british brought it out first.but even the don't call it soccer anymore, only americans do.

They need to realize that football is played with feet and not hands (that's why it's called FOOTBALL). The game they call football is actually Rugby, with a few changes of course.

It comes from the name association football, which was wat soccer was called back in the 1800's then as american football became more popular people began calling that football and assocation football "socc" for short, socc would eventually evolve into soccer, why is american football called football event though it involves almost no play with the feet? because it has its routes in rugby football.

The reason is we already have a sport called football, which is stupid because you only use your less than %5 of the game. I think Americans should start calling it football and change American football (stupid sport) to something else.

People in America don't call football soccer. For example: in Brazil we call it "futebol" and in Hispanic America they call it: "fútbol". Only in Canada and US they call it: "soccer".
