Yankees are no longer almighty, average at best. The devil rays have a lot of talent, it is raw talent mind you, so they do have the ability to play good baseball. Sports players have the ability to raise there game to another level, it is more mental than physical. You play harder subconciously you do little things that you normally don't do. It is just like when a younger player plays with more veteran players, they play to there level. How about when a powerhouse team plays down to a lower level against a weaker team? This year that's not the case with the Yankees however. They are inconsistent and streaky at best.

A friend of mine always considered himself the better competitor, athlete, etc. than me, but I would often beat him in this and that one-on-one type competitions. I would rib him about it--what are friends for, right?--and his "excuse" would always be the same. He would say, "You're only as good as your competition." By that he meant that he couldn't get up for a game against the likes of little ol' suck-at-the-sport me the way he could for somebody GOOD.

While it always bugged me that he said that, I think it's true. These athletes MAY be professionals, but they are humans too. You just cannot take a bad team seriously the way you can a good or great team. Consider THIS thought:

Sometimes the best motivator is the threat that you are going to lose.

Now put it all together. A bad team like the D-Rays has EVERY reason to believe they will lose to the Yanks. They don't want to get embarrassed, which maybe pumps them up a notch. The Yanks on the other hand cannot take this team seriously and their game drops a notch or two. Next thing you know ol' Jed's a millionaire.

There is such a fine line between winning and losing at that level of competition that any team can beat any other team on any given day. Recently, the Rays have caught the Yankees when they are not scoring runs and have been able to shut them down even though the Yankees are the better team.

It's irony-driven reality, kinda like the game Stratego -- the Spy is totally useless (everyone can whomp him) except for taking out the otherwise-unbeatable Field Marshal. If the Marshal didn't have a weakness, the game would be pointless.

They have decent starting pitching and can hit. If they can stay away from their middle relief like they did yesterday they're in decent shape. In baseball last place teams beat pennant contenders all the time.
