Maple Syrup problem
EQUATION: (V*P)product = SUM(V*P)ingredients
Vproduct=50
Let Vms= x
Let Vcs= 50-x
P= Prices, all known
Then: 50*2.36= 6*x + .8*(50-x)
118 = 6x +40-.8 x
5.2 x = 78, so x= 15 (maple syrup)
50-x = 35 (corn syrup)
2. EQUATION" Perimeter= 2L + 2W
Let W= w
Let L = 3w -2 (I assume this is what the problem said; you skipped it)
So 28 = 2 w + 2 (3w-2)
w=4, l=10
BTW: If you got 12 and 84, you should have realized something was terribly wrong. That's why you should write down the equations before you start solving them.

let m be the number of gallons of Maple syrup
and let c be the number of gallons of corn syrup

m + c = 50
6m + .80c = 2.36(50)

m + c = 50
6m + .80c = 118

m = 50 - c

6(50 - c) + .80c = 118
300 - 6c + .80c = 118
-5.2c = -182
c = 35 gallons

m = 50 - 35
m = 15 gallons

i don't see how you get 45 gallons of maple syrup

let L be the length and w be the width
and assume you meant the length is 2 inch MORE than 3 times the width
L = 3w + 2

P = 2(L + w)

28 = 2(3w + 2 + w)
14 = 4w + 2
12 = 4w
w = 3

so the width is 3in and the length is 11in
