So is 'like' the new 'umm..' now?

I've noticed how people nowadays say the word 'like' a lot when they speak. For example a teenage girl on the phone would say: So like, when yesterday I drove the car for like the first time, I felt, like, pretty weird

Whatever happened to the word 'umm..'? I find that more appropriate though both are pretty irritating!

Hah.."like" is actually old now...it was a hit during the '90s...now teenagers don't really say anything now due to excessive use of ipods... =)

I used to talk that way when I was a teen, and I'm 57. Most of us grow out of it and gain (or regain) our articulation as we mature.

I don't think like, like, ever went out of style. It was used when I was, like, a teenager, and it's still, like, used now.
And it is, like, really, like, annoying, but, like everyone, like, uses it!
