By tradition, more than any technical reason, drives A and B are reserved for floppies. When I started with computers in the early nineties, drive A was for the 720 K disks which looked kind of like the 1.4 MB, or 3.1 inch, ones we have today. Drive B was reserved for the 360 K, or 5.1 inch, disks which were in a cardboard jacket, and which, I don't think are used much anymore, if at all.

There was a drive B which was specifically for the floppy disk i.e, 5.1 inch.
That is a floppy disk which is larger in size than the normal floppy (3.1inch)which we know today.
This drive was used in the olden days i.e, the system previous to pentium MMX which uses DOS as operating system
Thanx.

there's no reason why NT/2K/XP couldn't have used A: and B: for something other than the floppy drives. The BIOS itself doesn't 'reserve' the A: and B: drive letters. Nor does it even refer to them as such. Yes, it mentions them in most BIOS setup utilities, but it's just showing the equivalent human-speak for however it refers to them
