Chickens can fly, though but only a few metres away. They can fly more distance downhill. They are not build to fly. But they can run faster than any other birds. Although they have wings, the span of their wings are very short compared to other predatory birds like an eagle, a hawk or an owl. If these predatory birds can grow as big as chickens, their wingspan will be more than 3 to 4 metres.

Domestic chickens, for the large part, have been bred to increase their meat production in bulk and weight, while reducing their ability to fly in order to prevent escape. The combination of these two breeding choices results in a bird too heavy to support its own weight in flight. The same process is the reason why barnyard turkeys cannot fly.

They do fly but just limited. It is due to their body weights especially those heavy breed domesticated chicken.
However some chickens are not capable of long distance flight but they are generally capable of flying for short distances such as over fences. Chickens will sometimes fly to explore their surroundings, but usually do so only to flee perceived danger.

as others have said because there breed not to fly and because their too heavy, their bones aren't hollow like flying birds, their weight compared to wingspan is not near that of a flying bird, some owls and hawks are very big and heavy so they have very large wingspans.
