Some gases ("greenhouse gases") let sunlight in, which warms the Earth, and then block that heat from leaving. That's the "greenhouse effect", and it's a natural thing, mostly caused by water vapor.
Man is making excessive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly by burning fossil fuels. That causes the delicate natural balance to go out of whack and the Earth warms. That's global warming.
It won't be a Hollywood style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.
Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.

Gas given off by cars, air planes, and anting with an engine that runs on gasoline and fuels like gasoline go in to the atmosphere. These gases hold heat better than the gases that make up air. The amount of the gas from the cars, planes etc is getting to be so much that the earth is warming up. If we stooped throwing these gases (mostly CO2) in to the atmosphere then the plants will remove the excess green house gas and we will get back to normal.

Pollution and carbon dioxide are making the atmosphere thicker. Greenhouse gasses, which are required to keep the earth warm, are piling up in the atmosphere at in an unhealthy way, causing the earth's climate to continually heat up.
Here is how Futurama explains Global Warming, and is kind of accurate even though it's a cartoon: http://youtube.com/watch?v=SgE_mkR2oac

"Global warming refers to the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation."
That's the bare bones def. There are lots of causes such as greenhouse gasses from volcanic emissions, animal respiration, and man produced ones, and changes in the Earth's orbit and precession.
Its a natural phenomenon as is global cooling. We cannot stop it or affect it in any way.

global warming is the changing of weather of the world. for example in the arctic the snow is slowly melting because it's already warm.polar bear and zeals and other animals that are living there needs snow to hunt or live.

It's when Greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide from cars and vehicles, and alot of other energy) get trapped in the planet and make it hotter . also it breaks away the atmosphere ,making sun rays more violet.
