I grew up in Philadelphia in the 40's and what people refer to as the mafia was very prominent. Their families sent their children to the same school that I attended. The fathers were very good family people, giving generously to the church. The last time I was in Philly, the mafia was still around, but keeping a very low profile. It's the same out here in California and in Vegas. They are excellant business people and it would be foolhardy to think that they've completely disappeared. I'm personally more concerned with the CIA.

Which Mafia ? The Jewish mafia in Vegas, The Italian Mafia in Vegas, NY & Chi-town, The Irish mafia in Hells Kitchen, the Russian Mafia in NYC or the Asian Mafia - Yakuso - in all the chinatowns everywhere ?

Note The Italian Mafia is the only one that is romantic enough to make movies and series about though ..though diminished because of relentless law enforcement - to the exclusion of the other mafias ( which is interesting in it self ) - there is some great conspiracy books on the topic: The Book Red Mafia: How the Russian Mob Has Invaded America
by Robert I. Friedman

Friedman's premise is that due to encouragement from the Jewish Anti-Defamation League ". . .state and Federal law enforcement agencies were loath to go after Russian mobsters, instead devoting their energies to bagging Italian wiseguys . . .because the Russian Mob was mostly Jewish, it was a political hot potato. . ."

Thus, the crackdown on the Italian mafia is designed to open criminal doors to jewish gangsters, who number about 6,000, according to Friedman.

Further, jewish attorneys are double agents to assist in the bringing down of the Italian mafia. Note that Cherkoff spent all his energies on bringing down the Italian mafia.

Yes it is. Still alive in New York (five families), Chicago, Philadelphia, New Jersey and some other cities. It is diminished because of law enforcement methods improving.

Yes they are ,There's a few in every state the reason you don't hear about them is cause they don't get caught. They have people in Science,Laboratories, and what not to make undetected products to kill people with. You see it all the time on the Unsolved Murders and such programs .

Maybe, but I think they'd have to be a lot more subtle now a days. BTW, I've been enjoying all the gangster movies on cable lately.
