Everybody suddenly starts cheering, " Good our kids have 'embraced' the reading habit!" I've never understood the Harry Potter thing. I've always felt it was stupid to stand in line for the next Harry Potter book. There are so many good books kids could be reading, but they are devoting their time and energy to what basically equates to as a serial comic book. The author has made a lot of money, Hollywood is going to make a lot of money and Daniel Radcliff's career as an actor will flush right down the toilet as soon as he becomes an adult.

And yes, I do agree that the Media brainwashes the American public. The trick is to know what's crap and what's reality. The sad thing is the majority of the people don't know the difference.

In a word, yes. So many people are unable to think for themselves. The Harry Potter craze is distasteful. Witness how the release of the "last" book (I bet she'll go back on that) has been cynically manipulated. Released on a Friday night as the kids break up for their summer holidays. Dozens of press releases in the two weeks leading up to it to allow plenty of time for "pester power". Even a press release about Childline taking on extra operatives to cope with children feeling a sense of bereavement over the much-hyped possibility that a fictional character will die a fictional death!

It's all about starting them early in the world of media brainwashing.

As usual, the Brits and others get taken in hook line and sinker by the money men.

Harry potters new book (whatever it is called) goes on sale at an horrendous price and people are queing up to buy it.

The profits off this are going straight into someone pockets and the HP freaks are happily putting it there.

The next time their is an appeal for overseas aid, it will be these people who have lined their pockets at your expense, who appear in the media asking you to give more.

Yet I suppose, like the latest mp3 player or latest kitchen gadget, you have just got to have it.

So spend away, you sad sad people!

There's much more to Harry Potter than the books. It seems to have become a cult among the young middle classes. I've seen teens from as far away as California USA queueing outside Hatchards in Piccadilly here in London for a couple of days. Lots of others from Euro-Land as well as the UK.

One puzzle. How come a bunch of Belgian kids got to be first in the Hatchard's queue? You think our kids here in UK are just too slow, or what?

There's a positive here--at least the last book will be released and the fad will disappear. People are looking for escapism right now rather than facing a huge bundle of problems that the world should be confronting, but is not.

You're right--people are being endoctrinated. A lot of people like me believe it's to corporate globalism which is very exploitive and does not support the middle class or the average citizen, who is programmed to sit down shut-up and consume.

I support you completely. I love that Rowling's got so many people, young and old, to read....and read alot! Can't give you a quote, I only read the first one and really don't remember. To cathrl169 above: I love it when people try to show how intellectual they are by putting down someones choice of reading materiel. Do you realize that these "HP" fans are mostly teens....isn't it wonderful that they are reading and focusing on books rather than sex & drugs. Stop being so pompous, no one cares that if you can quote Shaksepear, which by the way, in it's time, was considered trashy reading for "semi-illeterates". It was written to entertain the common people, much like Harry Potter. RA RA RA RA RA RA RA RA RA RA RA RA RA RA RA!!!

How sad to see some people take a kids series of books so seriously.

It's laughable to see people describing this as a 'fad' or 'craze' when its been going on for 7 years. A pretty long 'fad', no???

Correct. But I'm afraid its not the kids who are the brainwashed but the adults. I passed a bookshop tonight and the over twenties were lined up like sheep to the slaughter.

We as a human race are finished. Controlled by a few rich media men and led here and there and our money syphoned out of the banks bu "Direct Debit" - for that read "leaked"!

Hey, Harry Potter is a great series of books, I'm not young, I have read every book and have thoroughly enjoyed them, where as my eleven year old daughter reads many many books but is not interested in the least by 'Harry'
Just think, what harm is it doing?
It is a good thing, not bad.
Chill. ♥
