Some we do and some we don't. Take a look at large stores and see where their AC units are. They are on the roof.
In a residential home, it is easier to place the compressor on the ground. It's easier to service, and most A coils are located in the lower level with the furnace. good luck.

I assume you are asking why the external A/C unit is on the ground. This is because the A/C unit itself is very heavy and placing it on the roof or in a tree would be very difficult. The registers in your house that actually blow cold air should be in the ceilings. If this is not the case and you live somewhere hot, get your house re-ducted.

like you said heat rises right well...we put it on the ground so we can push all of the hot air up and out so just remeber to keep a window open

The airconditioner itself has no cold air in it........so the question has no relevence...there are severel ducts and vents thatt disberse the cold air inside the house...away from the ground.....

We don't. not all of them. There are just as many on roofs as on the ground, look around you.
I made money keeping them clean and the pigeons from nesting around them in Vegas.
