The formula depends on 3 factors: how likely it is for intelligent life to form on earth-like planets, how many earth-like planets are there, and how long does intelligent life last.
These factors have only one study to compare itself against -earth- so we cannot determine them. Then again, based on our current exploration into space there does not seem to be any earth-like planets closer than numerous light years away.
So then we have to consider that even if intelligent life exists, and that humans cannot go faster than the speed of light (as is currently believed by most of the scientific community), it is possible that by the time our civilizations travel the thousands of light years that we may be away from each other that both of our civilizations were destroyed by war, disease, or purely because our suns would burn out before we could possibly reach each other.
I believe that, even if taking the huge leap of saying that there are intelligent beings, the chances of our civilizations 1) finding each other, 2) being able to reach each other before our suns die out, 3) both being advanced civilizations (what if aliens visited humans just 50,000 years ago, they would not be very impressed with us) are so slim that there is no use in worrying about it.

The universe is vast. Out there in an unending vastness there could probably be another system though not exactly the same as ours, which can also sustain life. While these has not yet been concretely verified yet it's very probable that somewhere out there, there could be life with high intelligence only that it is impossible for us and for them to reach out and communicate with each other.

Aside from an astronaut or cosmonaut, the odds are in favor of intelligent life outside of Earth. There are 300 billion stars in the Milky way galaxy alone; and there are billions of galaxies like the milky way.

Undoubtedly yes...how can there not? I don't think we are a fluke that happened...there are others outside of our solar system that will be discovered many years from now.

yes, but in order for them to visit us, they would need to be slightly more advanced and past all world wars.
