the absorbency of the tampon determines it's size. super plus absorbency tampons are huge, regular absorbency are medium sized and light absorbency tampons are small.
you might want to start off using a light tampon until u get used to them. make sure you a pad as a back up tho, light tampons are not very absorbant.
and remember that scene from mean girls when that girl says: "people say i'm not a virgin because i use super-jumbo tampons, but it's not my fault that i have a heavy flow and a wide-set vagina'' lol

Just plain Tampax tampons come with cardboard applicators. Tampax Pearl tampons come with smooth, plastic applicators. I use Tampax Pearl, because they're easier to insert (they really just slide right in) and they don't hurt like the ones with the rigid, cardboard applicators. I've been using tampons since I was 14. I'm 19 now. The absorbency you need will depend on your flow. If you're having a very light day, a junior size tampon would probably work, but if you're having a heavy day, a super absorbency tampon might be what you need. The easiest way to insert them, for me at least, is when I'm sitting on the toilet. When you buy a box, there will be directions inside to show you how to insert them. All you have to do is relax and it should go right in. I don't know what kind of tampons your mom is using, but tampons aren't dangerous at all unless you leave them in for over seven hours (which isn't sanitary - change your tampon often). Let her know that you're uncomfortable wearing pads and now that you've started your period, you should have a choice of what type of feminine products will work best for you. Not everyone is going to like the same type of products.

junior or light absorbency is the smallest size, probably the size of your pinky.
Then theres regular which is like the size of your middle finger.
Then theres Super which is the thickness of your thumb and about as long as your pointer finger.
You can buy a variety pack with 3 absorbencies to just check them out, and try the smallest first, if it leaks within two hours you need the next size up. You should need change a tampon every 3- 4 hours. I wouldn't recommend the super unless you have a VERY heavy flow.

All I wear are tampons I have not worn a pad in 6 years and I use the regular ones. Playtex makes a great one for beginners like yourself called a "slim fit" tampon. I would suggest you try that and if that isn't enough protection for you than move up to a regular absorbancy.

The absorbancy is size. Tampons come in super, regular and light absorbancy.
They also make slender or "teen" tampons, which are great when you are first starting out.

The absorbency is the size of the tampons.
Teen size or Slim Regular are the smallest and Super Plus is the largest. Most use Regular or Super. It's not recommended you use Super Plus unless your flow is extremely heavy - which most women aren't.
I use Super on my heavy days and Regulars on my lighter days.

tampons are sooo much better, once u get them in, u dont even FEEL them [if u put them in rite], ok so on the box itll probably say slender [or slim], regular, super, and extra super or sumthing like that. now usually there are absorbancy charts on the back, and depending on how much bloodflow, the bigger the tampons gonna be. so slender is the smallest, and thats for when u first start getting ur period. regular, is a fair amount of blood, and super/extra is a lot...this is after uve had ur period for a long time. but yea the more absorbancy the bigger the tampon is gonna be.

Absorbency is size in tampons. The higher the absorbency the bigger they are, but really they dont get much bigger in size. If you used pads in the past and didnt have any problems you would probably be fine with regular absorbency unless you have a heavy flow.
