GT comes from the Italian term, Gran Turismo, which translates into Grand Tourer or Grand Touring. This is classically used to identify vehicles that could tour (long distances) comfortably (and usually quickly / fast).
In the case of the Grand Am, it is purely a trim level (and does not necessarily mean "Grand Touring"). In American cars, this trim level is often associated with their premium/top or sports trim, and thus tend to have more powerful motors, better suspensions, etc.
'99 Grand Am GT: 3.4 L V6, 170 hp, 155 lb-ft
'99 Grand Am SE: 2.4 L Inline-4, 150 hp, 155 lb-ft
Another example of its use as the sports model/trim level is the Ford Mustang GT, which is the most powerful Mustang that is not a limited edition (such as the Shelby).

See that stiching in the seats and that plastic wing on the trunk That's a GT.... slight trim differences and lots of Grand Am were sold as GT even though they were all not full GT packages. Extras like tach two gauge center stack. Pontiac Historic can help you if you find a really nice one.

It has a great stereo, and the engine supplies you a effective combination of gas financial equipment from common octane gas with off-the-line ability. Handles very tight with very thick sway bars and variable ability help steerage, and that i've got discovered my '02 to be extremely sturdy. a great style of techniques on the GT trim, and it extremely is a extremely clever automobile too. it will inform you whilst to alter the oil, in the journey that your oil is low, in the journey that your coolant is low, alert you in the journey that your gas is low, inform you whilst your washer fluid is low, and springs with stuff like ABS brakes and traction administration. i in my view like the way it cruises on the line; the engine loafs. purely be confident to have your mechanic examine it for problems till now procuring, and verify you have the decrease intake manifold gasket checked.
