r^3 / r^8 = r^ -5 or you can write it as 1/(r^5)

When you have common terms (variables, numbers) in both the numerator and denominator, keep them the same and simply do arithmatics with the powers.

For example, in a division, you will subtract the bottom power from the top power. In multiplication, you will ADD the powers together, like this: A^4 x A^10 = A^14.

Hope this helps!

You subtract exponents the top from the bottom 8-3 = 5, so the answer is 1/r^5, or if you go the other way, you subtract 3-8 = -5, and the answer is the same r^(-5)

Here is how it works arithmetically:
r^3/r^8 =
r^3/(r^3 * r^5) =
1/r^5 =
r^(-5)

Here are some rules for exponents that apply here.
(a^p)(a^q)=a^(p+q)
a^1=a
a^0=1

Now, think a minute... a=a^1
And (a^p)(a^q)=a^(p+q)
so (a^1)(a^q) = a(1+q)
what value for q would make the exponent 0?
Hint, -1. Because 1 + -1=0... right?
What do you multiply a by to get 1?
Hint: 1/a

Now (a)(1/a)=1
(a) = a^1
That means that 1/a = a^(-1)

Now, let's look at the problem given
(r^3)/(r^8)

From that little exercise we just did, 1/(r^8)=r^(-8)
So the problem is now
(r^3)(r^[-8])

And, from that rule I mentioned above,
(r^3)(r^[-8])=r^(3-8)=r(-5) = 1/(r^5)

There are a number of approaches to this problem. But I'm presuming you're working with exponents. Since this approach deals with exponents and the rules governing them...

r^3/r^8

= r^3 * r^-8

= r^(3+(-8))

=r^-5

=1/r^5

This can be written like this:

r*r*r / (r*r*r*r*r*r*r*r)

Cancel r*r*r on both the top and bottom, giving

1 / (r * r * r * r * r), which is r to the -5 power.

You subtract exponents: 3-8 = -5

since the base is the same, all u have to do is subtract the powers because it is a division.
>r^3/r^8
=r^(3-8)
=r^-5
do u get it

r^3/r^8
subtract the exponents
r^-5, you can rewrite this as 1/r^5

when u type on (this thing "lol" )
to express x to the power a type " x^a"
in ur case type
r^3 / r^8
but I prefered to use this link to make the answer easier to read for u ..
I hope this helps..
