1. Factor:
3y^2 - 4y - 20
Which of the following is one of the factors?

(3y - 10)
(y + 3)
(3y + 2)

2. Solve by factoring: One of the solutions to the quadratic equation 2x^2 - 7x + 5 is (5/2). What is the other solution? (Type only the numerical value of the other solution. Do not use any variables or skip any spaces.)

3. Factor 6x^2 + 5x - 6
Show all work

4. Factor:
x^2 - 5x - 6
Which of the following is one of the factors?

(x + 2)
(x + 5)
(x - 6)

5. Solve by factoring: One of the solutions to the quadratic equation x^2 + 3x - 28 is -7. What is the other solution? (Type only the numerical value of the other solution. Do not use any variables or skip any spaces.)

6. What is the Greatest Common Factor for the given polynomial?
5x^3y^2 + 15xy^2 + 25x^2y^3

5x
5xy
5xy^2
prime

7. Factor completely:
8x^4 + 4x^3 - 24x^2

4x^2(2x^2 + x – 6)
4x^2(2x – 3)(x + 2)
4(2x^4 + x^3 - 6x^2)
prime

8. 2x^2 + x - 3
9. 2x^2 - 5x - 3
10. 2x^2 - x - 3

1. a
2. 2
3. (3x-2)(2x+3)
4.(x-6)(x+1)
5.(x-4)
6. c
7. c
8.(2x+3)(x-1)
9.(2x+1)(x-3)
10.(2x-3)(x+1)
11.(2x-5)^2
12.(4x+5)(x-5)

Now, did you learn anything? I suggest you do the factoring and come up with your own answers and check them against these.

Hint: Break up the plain number in the expressions into factors that when added (or subtracted ) give you the middle term (coeff of x term) and when multiplied give you the number only term. With a little practise you will get the hang of it. If you just put down answers you are only cheating yourself.
