Because we are not as great as we think we are.

I am answering your question before I even read the other applies, so this is what I think: Maybe the only time humans have the ability to fly is when they die and become angels.

The shortest answer that is mostly true is....

Reality is complicated and operates under a lot of rules. We have gravity to worry about, and the atmosphere can only do so much when it comes to generating lift against the force of gravity, especially for not-so-small critters like us. If you're the size of an insect, like a fly or a bumblebee, apparently you can fly pretty much any old way you like, but....

If you are much bigger than a rabbit or a housecat, it gets complicated quickly. And to make a *very* long story (evolution) very short, it takes some *doing* to develop a specialized ability like flight, or even like what flying squirrels do when they glide around from treetop to treetop. You need to be the right critter in the right place at the right time, for multiple generations, at the very least.

And we weren't. We were too busy climbing down out of the trees and hitting the plains and savannahs looking for food, which put more priority on upright posture than on flying around. Really, if you look at where the muscles are, they are in our legs. We "fly" by running. If we were to fly like birds, the muscles would have needed to stay in our arms and chests, like they do in the other apes, but in orang utans especially. They "fly" by brachiation--swinging from tree limb to tree limb by their arms, much like the lesser primates, monkeys and lemurs *usually do*.

So yeah, we weren't even remotely the right critter in the right place at the right time....not for flying. Instead, we ended up developing something else, that turned out to be about as biologically expensive to maintain and keep up....

which is the other side of the equation. We have these big honking *brains* that take up, on average 5 percent of our body's mass, but some 21 percent of the oxygen we take in when we breathe. The brains we have are *already* difficult to keep up and maintain. Likewise, the muscles and cardiovascular ability your average *bird* of flight has is *also* difficult to keep up and maintain. Some hummingbird species have to eat *twice* their body weight in nectar a day while they are in long, migratory flight.

Odds are I'd say that we would have *problems* maintaining both the first-rate brain and a bird-like power of flight at the same time. The biology would just be rough on us as living beings.

So....we come up with non-biological solutions to the problem, using our brains to cheat as usual. ^_^

But I'm not going to be as arrogant as some and say we will *never* be able to fly under our own power. Who knows? Maybe there's a hack somewhere, in our brains, in gravity, in the earth's magnetic field, somewhere, that we just don't know about and haven't exploited as yet.

In the meantime though, yes, we are rather stuck with our toys, our airplanes, helicopters and gliders. Sorry.

I hope this helps though. ^_^ Thanks for your time.

Because then the people who own the airlines would be poor like the rest of us. And they couldn"t make our lives heck with cnaclled flights and strange people probing your body.

We can fly. We just have to do it in an airplane.
