...although "Exorcist: The Beginning" is a very well-made film, and reflects what the filmmakers pretty much thought that the audiences wanted, there in fact, lies the problem; the film is undeniably exploitive in trying to anticipate what the devoted audiences of the original "Exorcist" wanted to see...which is supposedly many of the visual elements that made the original film so great and horrific...
...now, may I ask, why would we want to see the same thing, all over again!!!
The alternate prequel to "The Exorcist", entitled "Dominion: A Prequel to the Exorcist", takes a much more psychological and somewhat disturbingly dramatic approach to the initial encounter between the possessing demon, and the character of Father Merrin (despite the climatic battle between priest and demon, being nowhere near as legendary and death-defying, as original vocalized in the original film; remember the line, "...the exorcism went on for days; it damn near killed him!!"), and made for a much more compelling, interesting, and ultimately, a much better film.
All due credit to director Renny Harlin, for giving us a most reflectively exploitive and entertaining film, but director Paul "Cat People" Schrader's rendition was definately the better film.

I haven't seen the 3rd or 4th movie, but they all got not so good of reviews from critics. I think they over did or overkilled the movie. I still think the first one is the classic and the foremost the best of all of them. Once a original is the original and the best. I don't know why, but it seems that way with a lot of movies because when it came out it was a new idea of a movie. Like Alien, Friday the 13th, Rambo, Conan the Barbarian, Terminator, Back to the Future, Carrie, etc......
