why the brighter display ?

few years ago the goal to buy a good monitor was the one that didnt reflect the room lights or the sunshine from the windows (to avoid the eyes strain), now the newest laptops have a bright display, almost like a mirror, you can see yourself on it clearly. How can it be this change ? my eyes are the same.

My guess is that the displays that act like mirrors look more elegant therefore it sells better. Think about it. If you had two laptops and only one had the reflecting display, would you buy the reflecting one (because it looks nicer)?
