you're now 8 game back again. And with your magic number to be eliminated now standing at 61, on what day you the yankees become "offically" out of the race?

This question is for the yankee fans that posted a similar question a few days ago.

I am getting scared, but I am a sox fan. The Yankees have the largest payroll, and thus the best talent, in baseball, they are not out of it. Remember '78. The yanks were down by more than 8 at the break and came back to take the division. Also, look at the comparisons:
A-rod is way better than Lowell, no question.
Jeter is way better than Lugo, again no question.
Cano ended last season hitting .342. For that I would expect him to pick it up and do better than Pedroia.
Youkilis is hitting .203 with only 1 Hr for the past month. Phillips has hit at .288 and that Duncan kid looks pretty good.
For the outfield: Coco and JD have been mediocre, about as good as Abreu and Cabrera. Matsui has the same # of hr as Manny and 10 points lower in BA. Ortiz has been better than Damon, but he is going to go on the DL soon. He has been hurting for weeks. Overall, the Yankee linup is far superior

Beckett has been lights out, but his ERA is only 9 points lower than Wangs. Mussina and Pettitte and Schilling and Wakefield have close ERAs. Matsuzaka has a worse ERA than Clemens. With Hughes coming back, he should be better than Tavarez or even Lester when he finally returns.
So yankee SP is pretty comparable to Sox.
The bullpen is another story. The Yanks need someone to close out games. Rivera hasn't got it done this year. Who else do they have? Brian Bruney I guess, but that is still not close to comparing with Papelbon and Oki.

No, the Yankees should not be scared. They will climb back in. They might not win the division, but it will be interesting.

I went to a game in Yankee Stadium on Monday night. A few seats away was an archetypal fan -- big, loud, biased (fortunately he seemed to have skipped "drunk", so I'll credit him that). All night long he heckled Jays players -- "no hitter!", "strike three!", and so on -- and never once got it right for the first seven innings. He did get one right in the eighth, but that was, I presume, probability catching up with him.

It was amazing, a live demonstration of the unwavering faith of Yankee fandom. No matter how much refutation is provided by mere facts, the fealty unto the pinstripes is steadfast.

Yankee fans are simply INCAPABLE of acknowledging even the possibility of missing October.

This is not a condemnation, merely a small testimony to how deeply runs the blood of this particular tribe, Yankee Fandom. They'll be buying preparatory October cases of champagne even on the day the magic number for elimination stands at One.

Some of the t-shirts on sale around Da Stadium are -- well, "tasteless" is the most generous I can be. "Foul" is closer to the mark, or "mean-spirited", and mostly aimed at Boston and the Red Sox. Honestly, does any other team, besides the Yankees, inspire such vitriol, such disparagement of the competition? Baseball is great good fun and should stand above such garbage, but at least in the vicinity of this one yard, does not. The need to not merely win but make the losers eat dirt is unhealthy.

You are too much. No the Yankees are not getting close to being eliminated but if they don't start playing better they may as well be. 8 Games can be made up if they get back to winning.

It seems to me like when the Yankees win, they play like they're on top of the world, but when they lose, they unravel.

Blowing the lead last night, coupled with today's loss- that's not a good sign for Yankee fans.

Chipmaker should get best answer...nobody can top that. And the reaction of that crazy Yankees fan a few posts above his only confirms everything he wrote.

It's nice when someone says 'we have class' after they've just spent a paragraph trying to completely denigrate another person.

I am. I'm a huge Yankee fan and I'm nervous that they will blow it again. Everytime the Yankees look like they get out of there slump, they start to do bad again and go below .500. I hope they don't do that again.

I will worry about an 8 game lead when there are 7 games left, not until then.
