The Software Restore Function is used in the advent of your computer crashing and it allows you to revert your computer as it was at an earlier date.
You can't use that function to transfer the contents of your old hard drive to a new one like that.
You will need to transfer the contents from one drive to an External Drive, Change the hard drive and then transfer from the external drive to your new replaced drive.

Oh one last thing unless you have the software disc's all the programs you had will also be gone and need to be replaced, That will include the operating system since XP.
They implamented a Code Key to unlock the software starting with XP.

That doesen't make any sense. If you mean replacing your hard drive then do this.

Unscew the big screw on the back of the computer. Slide the side panel off. (Make sure no static electricity gets in there, if it does, then you just put a bullet in it's head.)

On the side toward the front, find the black box toward the bottom, it should be about as big as half of a DVD case, and a little bit thicker.

Unplug it, slide it out, and toss it at your brother. Slide the new one in, and plug it in. Put the side panel back on, and screw the big screw back in.

When you start the computer, it'll be like a brain in a new body ... it'll detect the "new" hardware. Once you set it up, you'll need to get any new software back on and then you're good to go.
