My 3 year old just caught a baby lizard. Its so tiny i'm not sure if it can eat bugs. Its only like 2 inches long including tail. He's throwing a fit to keep it, we have it in a goldfish bowl with grass and a few small rocks. But now what should i try to feed him?

Thanks to all that replied. We'll try a bug or so tonight, if he doesn't eat that we may try going outside in the morning to find a small cricket. To the one who said to release him, I only allow him to keep it a few days (sooner if it acts sick) then he has to let it go, unless i know how to keep it up for sure, like turtles or something like that.

If You Keep It:
Well, you're usually supposed to feed reptiles insects no bigger than the space between their eyes, so try feeding it aphids and tiny bugs like that. But a creature that small might not have that much of a chance of survival, especially when you don't know what kind of lizard it is.
If You Don't:
Let it go, where you found it, if you can. It will probably be happier where it came from.
Another option:
If possible, "fence in" the area where you found the lizard and watch it for a long time. You might see it eating what it eats in the wild. Try different locations, it might eat plants or find bugs from different plants.
Good luck!

What kind of lizard is it? The little ones that run around in FL. You shouldn't have one of those as a pet. They aren't pets they are wild reptiles. Would you find a snake on the ground and say I'm keeping it? You should release him back before he dies and maybe buy your some a lizard from the pet shop. Or when he is sleeping tell him the lizard got away and you can't find it. I have a mountain horned lizard and they take a lot of maintence to keep up with. You need to create a habitat for it to survive. You can just throw it in a goldfish bowl and think he will survive. Please let it go.

I don't know what kind of lizard it is, but if it is an insectivore then it should be eating some sort of insects, not fruits. And you can get crickets at just about any pet store. But on a further note, RELEASE THE POOR THING! How would you feel if something big enough to hold you in its hand just grabbed you and tossed you in a tiny cage? I am sorry for being kinda blunt, but I just don't like it when people take animals from the wild.

We have a gecko, and we buy a dozen crickets at the pet store for only $1. That's probably what your lizard would eat too. Plus, we have a heat lamp on our lizard which provides the warmth which they need.

Put the lizard back. It most likely will die. It's never a good idea to give in to 3 year old fits at the expense of a animals well being.

You really should release it back into the wild. You can actually kill the lizard. Not all lizards eat bugs.

Lizards like lots of bugs. Flys, ants, grasshoppers. Call your local vet they'll be able to tell you a real good diet for lizards.

Lizards eat bugs. Try to catch some small ones he could eat. if he gets hungry enough he'll eat anything.

If not bugs, try feeding tiny bits of salad.
If that fails, go to your local pet shop and ask someone there.
