They keep them separated to keep the breeding line clean and also for customers to choose easier what they want
The ratio is 1 male to 2-3 females, and that rule goes actually for all live bearers
If you have more males then females, the males will chase the females to death due to stress
Hope that helps
Good luck

the reason why they seperate them, is becuase that way breeders dont get random guppies spawns, that way you can pick the male and the female and get that mix, if they were mixed together, then any male can breed with any female and then breeders wont know what they will get.
not all stores do this, only real professional petstores will do this. If your not into selective breeding, you dont have to worry about it.
generally it is about 1 male for 3 females.
Mollies are the same in the term livebearers, but care is different. Mollies are alot larger and need a much bigger tank. They would also like alittle more aquarium salt in the water than guppies will.
If your a beginner, guppies are better, but make sure you have enough tank room.

Yes they are seperate. If not the pet store would have alot of baby guppies on their hands :)
As far as gender ratio goes, as long as you have more female's then you do males, it will be fine.
And I'm not sure if mollies are the same way, I've just recently began housing mollies.

Yes, they seperate them, And as for the number, IDK, but I got 1 male and 1 female guppy once. And boy it was a mistake! They have babies every 30 days, and pretty soon, I had almost 300 guppies and tons of tanks, I couldnt get rid of them fast enough!

the best way it to go for a 2 to 1 with 2 female and 1 male or even better 3 females so he dosent chase them to death
and generaly for non coupling fish that will work even for molies
