I just got an air pump for my tank and I just wanted to know if I have to turn it off at night or does it need to be on 24 hours a day? thanks!

It depends on what you're using it for. If you're powering an undergravel filter, or it's the only source of water movement for your tank, you do need to leave it on 24/7.

If it's being used in addition to a power filter (hang-on-tank, internal, or canister), or to run a bubble-powered decoration (bubble wall, diver, or something like that) it's okay to turn it off anytime you aren't around to see it.

If your tank water is warm because of the outside temperature, it can add some extra dissolved oxygen to your tank through water movement, which is important since warm water holds less oxygen, plus the bubbles breaking at the surface can increase evaporation and may help your tank cool down. Just something else to think about.

yes it has to be on 24/7

My pumps are on 24/7 for the last 13 years.

yes they have to be on 24/7 otherwise you will have no oxygen in your tank
unless you got a pump for a decoration as an addition to another filter, then you can turn it on or off whenever you want

Hope that helps
Good luck
