The African continent is separated from the Eurasian continent by the Mediterranean Sea. Suez Canal separates it from the Arabian continental plate.

Geographically, South America is separated from North America by Central America. Roughly between Central and Southern America lies the Panama Canal. If we talk about plates though, the Cocos and the Caribbean plates stand between the North and South American plates.

The South American plate is indeed different and separate from the North American plate.

What are you asking?

There are 7 continents North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica

Maybe because they were "discovered" at about the same time, they were sort of thought of as one big new place, so North and South America they were. I see your point, but I think of N. and S. as separate, as I was taught.
