depends on the soldiers performance, how long they go AWOL for and if it is during a deployment time. if they go AWOL during peacetime for a few days, article 15 hearings will probably commence, looking at a minimum 14 days confinement/restriction, with extra duty, and loss of half a months pay. if it is during war time it can be considered treason punishable by death(rarely) and more likely a dishonorable discharge with a lifetime of confinement at fort leavenworth. just depends on the soldier and the timing. If you are a soldier, I will tell you not to go AWOL. there are other outlets. DO NOT GO AWOL

If found and captured they will face a Court Martial(a trial) and be sentenced accordingly. It will be a military court not a civilian one and this is because you forfeit some of your rights as a citizen when you become a soldier and are held to much stricter laws and penalties. It's called being in the service. You are there to serve. Hope that helps.
