My friend injured his knee and the employees offered no assistance. They made him fill out and sign a form explaining what happened. I had to drive him to the emergency room to get his knee checked out. Should he contact a lawyer?

If so, what kind of lawyer?

I helped my friend to my car and then went in and got a copy of the form they made him fill out. Should he ask the company to pay the bill before he contacts a lawyer? Or after?

Well,

if he has hospital bills see if the company will agree to pay them, first.
They had him fill out an incident form so they are aware he fell and possibly sustained injuries.
If they refuse to pay or start trying to 'clown' him by giving him the run around, then I would suggest a Personal Injury attorney.
They always advertise on TV, Billboards and of course the local yellow pages,

I hope things work out.

My daughter got a push-pin jammed in her knee once. Exactly how i dunno, we all just heard her screaming and a store employee saw the pin jammed in there.
I filled out an incident report, and I rec'd a call a few days later from the corporate office.
They told me they were made aware of the situation and I had a certain amount of time to submit the hospital bills to them. Fortunately in our case, I took her to her doctor (co-pay instead of emergency room co-pay) and everything looked okay.
I called them back to tell them she was okay and Thanked them for the courtesy.
The did inform me I still had time to submit bills should something arise that we did not immediately notice.

Definitely, the first question they should have asked is "do you need an ambulance?". You should contact a personal injury lawyer and explain everything. If it's a big store I am sure there is a camera that saw the incident and that is good proof to be used in court that this is a legit case and not something trying to be made up for money. Also the lawyer who will represent you will be able to obtain a copy of the incident report from the store so if you did not get a copy it's ok. Hope he feels better...

A lawyer will take a fee (fair enough), probably 1/3 of whatever money your friend gets, so unless he's severely injured, he'd probably end up out part of the money he'd need for his medical bills. If he's permanently injured though, he probably should contact a lawyer. If he's just looking for payments of the bills from the ER, and maybe a little therapy, the store will probably be very willing to pay them.

He should contact the store manager of the store with his medical bills. If he doesn't get satisfaction there, he should contact corporate headquarters.

"Slip and fall" is a common situation for retail stores, and most of them will reimburse with little or no hassle.

Take the hospital bill back to the store and ask to talk to the manager about paying it. If they give you any problem at all, call a personal injury lawyer. Did you get a copy of the form he filled out?

It is too bad your friend fell. But how can we expect to go through life and never fall or trip? Must we run to lawyers every time we get hurt? Realistically though, the most you can probably expect is to get the medical bill covered. Law suits for personal injury are tricky and many people get carried away thinking they can reap huge amounts of money. The tendency for people to want to sue and blame others for simple accidents is unfair. Imagine if a person came to a party in your house and slipped on a wet spot resulting from someone else's spilled drink and decided to sue you, how would that impact you?
Just because things happen at places of business or institutions we assume a different posture and are too quick to lay blame for personal gain.
