Man,,what's wrong with Cable Ties and Gear Oil??
LOL,,naaa.

Rubber bands hold best,,but they're hell to get out.

There's some Cloth covered elastic bands,,,just like lil' miniature bungee cords.
They are cheap and dont get tangled in the hair at all,,,they just roll right off when ya wanna remove them.

Anyplace that has hair stuff sells them,,you'll instantly recognize them.

The Trick is to use one in 2 places.
#1,,,Make a tight ponytail and put one up close to your head.
It dont hafta be Tight, tight,,,just up close.

The Second one depends on how long your hair is,,,and how thick at the end.

You can either Fold the ponytail back towards your head,,,and put the 2nd band to hold that "Loop"

Or,,,if your hair is thick towards the end,,you can just put the 2nd band further down towards the end.
2~3inches of hair sticking out past the 2nd band doesnt get tangled.

It works good, cheap easy, quick to do and to remove.
As tight as they hold the hair,,they just slide right off when ya pull them,,,without ripping a buncha hair out.

Slide some extras on your handlebar grips,,,you'll always have em handy when yer ready to ride.

............................
Used to ride with a guy who used a ladie's "footie" thing.
It like a short sock made outa sheer panty hose type material.
They're just slipper-shaped,,no ankle part....so its kinda like a lil' bag.
He'd stuff his hair in the Toe End,,,then put a Beaded Hair Band around the other end and his hair at back of his head.

The Bead Bands are also cloth covered elastic.
But they're clamped in the middle to make like a figure 8.
On each end/Loop,,,there's a bead a lil' smaller than a marble.
So you can just wrap it around and Hook the Other end on the Bead.
Which is handy with a Very Thick wad of hair.
It just sorta snaps on & off.
They dont hold as tight except when there's a Big bundle of hair

Basically the same as if you actually used a sock,,,but easier to stuff the hair in,and lots lighter ,,plus near "invisible".

He swore by it,,
I tried it and didnt like the weight of having the hair all in a ball.
But it did work well other than that.

Just some things to try,,Ya gotta find what works for You

Good Luck

Put your hair in a ponytail and wrap it with an ACE BANDAGE. I thought it was a load at first, but when I actually tried it, it worked wonders. If you don't feel like wrapping it, the next best thing that has worked for me, anyways, is just to braid it. I hate having to brush all that gnarly tangle out of the hair, too!!!

Fella, the clues in the question - Sock!

They used to call them "popsocks" and they are the nasty half length tights you see old ladies wearing under their elasticated waisted trousers!

Buy a pair that are near to your hair colour,

cut the toe end off (paint the cut end with clear nail polish - or a bit of old varnish to stop it fraying)

pull it over your wrist and leave it there while you tie the neck end of your ponytail

On the last twist of your band slide the sock over your hand and ponytail in one go, and put the last twist on top of it.

Smooth down, wrap another band around the "end" end.

Ride off into the sunset!

A quick braid is easy.
Or use the regular hair elastics. You'll find them next to the hairbrushes in the women's beauty aisle. Just space them about 2 - 3 inches apart when you put them on.

My hair's too short to braid since I cut it a year ago, but it's growing again. I'll do the same as I did before. (above)

Wrap it with rubber bands.
Search the web for "scrungees" or "scrunchies"
Girls use them to keep their pony tails from unraveling.
You can get them anywhere, they come in black, now you know what they are and might give you some ideas.
