You can't "be" a good anchor. You should, instead, "be" you!

I was a successful anchor & News Director who trained anchors during my 10 years at a CBS affiliate. My first lesson was to break them of the habit of trying to "be" an anchor. Some tried to "be" Cronkite, or Huntley, or Brinkley, etc, etc, etc. All, by the way, came out of commercial radio news. Without that experience, you will struggle to be competent on air.

The audience has no idea who you are so why hide "you" behind a facade or "act". They can sense a phony immediately and will hit the channel button looking for someone who is "real". Succeed or fail as "you".

Does this work? One of my people is at CSpan, another at CBS in New York, another was at ABC in New York, another was anchor in Youngstown, Ohio and is now their Special features reporter, another is Sports Anchor in Rochester, New York.

Best of luck to you.

Start with being a good journalist. Do a beat for a few years. Develop a warm caring personality and if it's real all the better. Offer to work those holidays when none of the anchors want to be there , Christmas, News Year , thanksgiving, Labour Day weekends, weekends, early morning shows pre network ones.

Find a cause you're really interested in and get involved with it.

Be open to new ideas. Learn how to pronounce place names, continents, people's names , properly.

Be ready for anything and learn to just drop any mistakes and move on to the rest of your report. I've seen news anchors make a mistake then leave the set. Prepare yourself for anything.

Weigh a lot, and be made of metal.

Unless of course you are referring to the Ron Burgandy type of anchor. Then it is best to look as plastic as possible, dress conservatively and say things like "This just in!" and "Tragedy struck when an elderly woman lost her cat."
