My daughter had an MRI when she was 5. (Had a seizure and they didn't know why. The MRI didn't show a cause, which is GOOD. Some of the causes they CAN find are bad news, so those were ruled out. They couldn't never find a cause and she never had another, which I was told is not that uncommon.)

Anyway, they did sedate her pretty heavily, till she was deeply asleep. She needed to stay still but also -- at least back then -- the inside of the MRI was pretty loud and closed in and would have been quite scary for a little one.

Good luck.

Mostly when I've had Catscans when I was a kid I've never needed sedated, as for the MRI, the sedation was usually very milded and brought the edge off alot, I hope I've answered your question, I've had multiple of each during my life. MRI's are longer tests and you should definitely get sedated.

My 19 year old son (don't know if u would still consider this a child) had horrible headaches. Had both mri's and cat scans. Without them he would be dead today. He had an aneurysm at the base of his brain. That was 7 years ago and he is alive and well today because that was the only way that it could be found.
