You need to have pretty good balance and speed because the faster you will run the sturdier the pole will be. Strength is also a plus because you have to carry your body weight with the pole as you are vaulting, and keep the pole as straight as possible.

You have to have speed. Without speed your not getting anywhere. Strength is good to. You have to keep your one arm straight to make the pole bend or your not going to go anywhere as well. Poles get stiffer when using a longer pole or a pole that supports a heaver weight. Those are your main skills. The rest are the techniques which is the process of the run to the plant to the form when up. If you have a good fast run and good plant you should make it in the pit.

somewhat crazy. You have to know how to psych yourself up.

good age to start is 12 or 13 because you are beginning to develop the upper body strength required to get yourself upside down on the pole

A little bit of everything; speed ,strength, agility, timing, courage (it gets a little scary over 12'), and some gymnastic ability would be a plus. A very technical event.
