That's right; you DID make the commitment. They are not boring, it's your lack of knowledge about them and lack of attention to them that makes it seem so. You do have a short attention span. Well now you have to think about someone other than yourself.

So you've "lost interest?" Too bad. This is the time for maturity and to "stay the course" will shape your character. Your parents are correct. You are the one who whined and begged and pleaded - and now you will probably want to be on to the next short-term interest whether it's a cat or a dog or horseback riding or some new fashion trend. Your parents are wise; they are trying to engender in you some appreciation and the realization that you can't just treat a living being like you would a used paper towel and dump them.

Have you tried reading more about them? Learning their likes and dislikes? Can you imagine how THEY must feel knowing that you are so indifferent to them as living beings with their own personalities? Animals are extremely sensitive and know when someone does not care for them. You are being very hurtful to them.

It's like anything else. You can choose to love them! Make the effort to spend some time with them. Do this consistently and you will begin to see their good qualities. You are the one who is unseeing and unthinking; the one who is bored and limited in your mind; not them. If you will make the effort you will begin to see the truth.

If you really don't want them anymore, I would suggest finding them a new owner. Maybe a friend at school or something. If your parents know you have an allergy, they should understand the need to find them a home.
They deserve to have an owner that pays attention to them also. If getting rid of them is not an option, you need to suck it up and show them some attention. Maybe they'll perk up.

I'm allergic to pigs also, but I have 2 that I LOVE! I get itchy and break out in red blotches on my neck. I wear a high necked, long sleeve shirt when I play with them. A bigger cage will make them more active, as will more floor time. You have to give them something to do. They are as bored as you are. www.guineapigcages.com

Since you're allergic, you really should give them away for your own health because it sounds like you can't even be in the same room with them. Guinea pigs require social interaction, and they should be held daily..... so even if you made a commitment, it's for the best.

First off, I can't see how your parents would allow you to have them if you were allergic and didn't take medication so you could enjoy them in the first place!

My suggestion: Contact some local day care facilities or preschools in your area and see if they can accept them as a donation. When I had my day care center back in the 1990s we had all sorts of little pets. The kids learned compassion, responsibility and just plain enjoyed them!

If you would like to not keep your pet, it isn't always a bad thing. Maybe they would be better off with a person who can be closer to them and spend more time with them. It isn't your fault you're allergic.
Try calling local pet shops and asking them if they will take in the guinea pigs for free. Some of them do. Post an ad in the local newspaper or craigslist.com. See if one of your friends will take them, that way you can still go see them whenever you want.
