A so called friend wrote checks in my name at a local store. I don't have money for a lawyer. What should I do to prove I didn't write them?

you actually don't need an attorney, you can handle it yourself:
You can go to your bank and fill out an 'affidavit of forgery'. the bank has your signature on file so it will be easy for them to see whether or not it is your handwriting..........yes, the security dept (who also handles forgeries, etc believe it or not) will have either someone in the dept or contact with someone in the local DA's office who is a handwriting expert. Then you take the affidavit to the store the check was written to and give the affidavit to them......that will clear you of the check. You will possibly also need to file a police report, but that depends on where you live.

ABA American Bar Association will have lists of attorneys who do work pro bono (free or reduced sliding fee sort of arrangement). i could get a copies of the check and see how far off the signature is. i would ask the store what identification that they presented when the check was written. you could ask the bank why the check was accepted / they should have your signature card on file to compare to. you could try to work it out with bank and if not get an attorney. good luck.

You need proof. Go to that local store, speak to the manager about your situation and ask for some proof of the checks. That will make you win the case.

File an affidavit of fraud with your bank. Once that is filed, the BANK must investigate. They have more than enough resources to handle the case. This is a CRIMINAL matter not a civil case. You are the victim. Everyone else needs lawyers. You don't.

You need to find some kind of documentation that you were some place else. Perhaps the store has a security camera that you could get footage from footage.

Receipts showing that you were some place else.

Evidence you told the bank that your checks were missing would be helpful.

You need a Lawyer or else tell your friend to admit he/she did it. There are County paid Court appointted Lawyers. Go before a Judge and ask him/her for a Court appointed and tell them your broke. You need a Lawyer for this.

I would bring in as much as I could to the State Attorney's office with "your signature" on it.
If they refuse to listen to you, bring your material to the Judge.
Try getting your Bank involved. Go to your bank and explain what has happened, I'm sure they will help you prove that is not your signature on file.

the court can appoint you an attorney that can answer any questions for you. When you go to your first court date the judge will ask if you want an attorney just say yes. If you can't afford one the court will get one for you.

Press charges against your so-called "friend." Writing checks in somebody else's name is a criminal charge.
