There is no specific age. People who do things such as give discounts on sales to "senior citizens" are free to establish their own criteria for what that means.

65 heres an entry from wikipedia "Many Americans think of 65 as the beginning of old age because United States workers become eligible to retire with full Social Security benefits at age 65. People in the 65-and-over age group are often called senior citizens. In 2003, the age at which a person becomes eligible for full Social Security benefits began to increase gradually until it reaches 67 in 2027." wikipedia

I live in "Senior Housing" in Los Angeles and their minimum age requirement is 55. Burbank is 62. SSA says I won't receive benefits until I'm 67 and that's BEFORE 2027. Most restaurants have no problem giving me a senior discount. Some places refuse while claiming not a senior because I don't look "old" and wrinkled - even though all my hair is gray and rapidly thinning on the top! Then they refuse to see my driver's license saying they think I'm actually under 50! At that point I don't know whether to compliment them or tell them to shove it!

Good question. According to AARP-you only have to be 50.
At the local theatres it's 55. Some restaurants it's 60 and some get really hard nosed and make it 65. I'm 69 now and have lived in California since 1956. Obviously Medicare is still 65 or 62 if you choose to retire early. Confusing isnt it?

There doesn't appear to be any 'legal' age to be a senior citizen, especially in California. Some places give sr. discounts to 50-year olds, others to 55 and some to 60.

I think a lot of it depends on what County you live in and what you're looking for.

If the program you seek is a Federal or State funded one, usually the ages are 62 for disabled and 65 for other. It also depends on what services you are seeking. Many of them are means tested to make sure you are poor enough to receive the services, and this is no joke!

However, private sector can give discounts starting at any age they choose, and I certainly do take advantage of these.
Movies, banking, restaurants and anything else that gives a Senior discount will get my business.

The state of California does not have a specific age. The different agencies use different dates. For senior abuse, the minimum age to receive help is 63. For senior housing, the age specified age is "on Medicare/Medical". There is no one age that fits all.

Commerical establishments can use whatever age they want. It runs everywhere from age 50 (AARP) to 70.
