Why is the left so up in arms about this? God forbid we pay extra attention to young people from the Middle East, but don't you DARE get on a plane with a lighter.
Smokers carry cigarettes and - GASP! - lighters with them when they travel. What gives you - or anyone else - the right to tell them no?

I travel all the time and the best answer is matches. You can even keep those in your pants pocket because the security laser doesn't pick it up. Also, 9 times out of 10 I am able to get away with my lighter when I keep it in my camera bag. The extra-thick padding and the other little gizmos in the bag cover it up on the X-Ray. The worst that happens when they do find it, is they search the bag and take it away. No big deal. I just pretend like I forgot to take it out of the bag. Or you can always put it in your checked baggage, that is OK.

This isn't the 70s, where everyone wearing polyester was a potential firebomb.
They've concluded that even with lighters, we're safe because 4 ounces or less of toothpaste doesn't make a big fire.
Besides, we all have duct tape if we need it, right?

Do they? I haven't been on a plane in my entire life that permitted smoking...I think you're confusing DC outlets for the presence of a cigarette lighting.

Because tobacco is a BIG lobby... If people can't light-up the second they land, the terrorists have already won.

It's strange, some days they take the lighters and some days they don't.
But they never take up matches!

Seriously? Are you telling me they couldn't have done the same thing with matches?
Matches were never banned.
To answer your question though, it''s because it was a stupid rule to begin with.
