Why wont the UN recognize the independence of defacto countries like....?
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Abkhazia, Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, Transnistria, South Ossetia, Solmaliland ETC...these places actually run as independent countries but hardly anyone will recognize them, why wont the UN recognize and lend support to these defacto nations?

(This same question has been asked on Y!A before, I just wanted to ask again to get some more viewpoints)

Also, why does the independence movement of Western Sahara receive little or no media coverage?

There are a few reasons for them not being recognized:

1) Most large nations do not recognize their independence. The only way a small nation gets international attention is if it has a vocal advocate with clout.

2) These communities are small and would have a hard time surviving as independent nations. There has been experience of several micro-nations barely getting by and being heavily dependent on foreign protection and aid.

3) These examples all lack large and powerful groups of exiles in major Western nations. Bosnia and Kosovo got the attention of the West, specifically the USA, because of the strong exile communities that could lobby the government to act in their favor.

4) The founding of the nation goes against the norms of international law for one reason or another. Turkish Cyprus is highly disputed in terms of international law.

5) How the potential nation would act as an independent entity with international recognition. Very few nations are going to support the independence of a nation that will commit human rights abuses or will have problems with governmental stability.

6) These nations do not fit the idea of self-determination as envisioned by most nations under international law. A good example of this would be an independent Quebec. Most of Europe and the USA would not recognize the nation unless it went through the proper constitutional arrangements with Canada as a whole. A unilaterial declaration of independence would like lead to conflict and great international disdain.

It helps if other countries recognize this "defacto countries". If George Bush recognized any as a country and sent an official representative to be an ambassador to them it would go along way to help. But of course the U.S. doesn't even recognize officially North Korea.
Maybe you should direct this question to the Department of State and see what Condi has to say about it.

The reason is that all these countries are subjects of disputes as to their claims for independence from other bigger countries like Russia, Ukraine, etc.

These things take time and unfortunately, usually a great deal of struggle from the people who wish to declare their independence. Also the countries that want to keep these states within their borders are very much more powerful in international terms.

"Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" is not recognized, because:
1. 37% of the island of Cyprus has been illegally occupied by Turkish forces without a believable excuse
2. 1619 Greek Cypriots have been murdered..
3. and 200.000 people became refugees in their own country

Turkey did a lot of crimes, and founded guilty from many organizations of human rights....This part of the island will never be recognized as a "Turkish Republic"

None of these places are recognized by most world governments. They're all part of internationally accepted countries. As for Western Sahara, I don't know.

Because they run the risk of alienating larger, more powerful countries.

Turkish Cyprus will be recognized after the accession of Turkey into EU which is only a matter of time. Because differently from the most of the countries you have mentioned Turkish Republic of North Cyprus is only dependent on Turkey and there is not a powerful country that objects its existence. Europe only uses the issue because it suits their interests now, if what Greece says was taken seriously they would not allow a Turkish Cyprus for 33 years. Besides the British had promised to leave the island back to Turks when they first occupied it, because we are its former owner.

The Greek Cypriots are paying for their greed, they are paying for their barbarism. We'll never forget how they killed innocent civilians and how they supported terrorist EOKA. The only fault of the Turkish government was not to liberate Cyprus as a whole.

I'm sorry I can't comment on others because I don't have sufficient knowledge of them.

EDIT:
@Andreas

If you don't know what I'm talking about then you are lacking in intellect. What do you mean why we're still occupying it? Are you naive? Your fellow Greek friends attempted ethnic cleaning, hello? Makarios said that a couple of dozen times, I bet they don't teach you that in Southern Cyprus?

What are you claiming? Armless Turkish peasants put off bombs in Cyprus? They killed the Greeks? Turkish army fully armed landed on the island and started killing all Greeks? But the brave Greek peasants resisted with their anchors so they survived?

Greeks had a fully armed military junta from 1967 to 1974 on the island not Turks, Greeks had EOKA since 1955, you had psychos like Nikos Sampson who killed people and took their photos for his newspaper. Greeks wanted Enosis, Greeks wanted Turks to be wiped out. Greeks refused U.N plan, Greeks vomit hatred to Turkish Cypriots in every opportunity. What is the Akristas plan, a new winnie the pooh film scenario?

Now stop giving me fairy tales, you are insulting my intelligence. The blood stains of Dr.Nihat Ilhan's children has still not dried out. Would you like me to refresh your memory? It's a bath tub, why do you think they were hiding there? Playing hide and seek? Why don't you go and visit Dr.Nihat's house, it's a museum now, "Museum of Barbarism".

Would you like to hear what 'traitor' Angatiniotis says?

"The majority of the Greek Cypriot youth know very little about the events that led to the island's division. The tragic events of 1974 have been used as a huge curtain to cover up the real events that led to the division of the two people. In our schools it has always surprised me that while talking about the heroism of EOKA, they skip 15-years and continue with 1974. Either nothing happened between 1960 and 1974, or no one wants to discuss this. While researching the events during this period (1960-74), I realized that the second choice was right.
When I started to write this research, my cousin from Greece and her two daughters came to visit me and we started to discuss the events of 1963-74. The daughters knew nothing and what their mother knew was very confusing. At one stage of the discussion I mentioned some of the Greek Cypriot leadership's mistakes and all of a sudden this brought out the nationalist monster in my cousin who said: "Makarios' biggest mistake was not to have killed all the Turkish Cypriots in order for us to be comfortable".

This sweet and pretty woman, who couldn't even kill an ant, had suddenly turned into a killer who could carry out mass murders. She wanted a whole race to be wiped out. This is what I said to her: "In other words, do you mean taking out all the children from school, all mothers with their babies and all the men from their work places and taking them to a big hole in Messaria and murder them…Do you want to be one of the murders or the one of the persons using the bulldozer to cover the mass graves…"

There was silence. The example I gave helped her to understand the meaning of what she said. Then I started to speak again. "We tried this before in Ayvasil, Murataga, Atlilar, Taskent, but the only thing we succeeded in was soughing the fruits of our efforts".

Since our childhood we were taught that the Turks were barbaric dogs. My aunt used to say to me that they smelled because they weren't baptized. Whereas according to the Bible, we are modern Christians who love their environment. Then, why did our religious leader Makarios in 1964 say that 'If Turkey comes to intervene to protect the Turkish Cypriots, she will not find a single Turkish Cypriot to save…' The answer is clear. In Cyprus there is a saying, 'another priest's sermon'. In certain situations this enables us to hate.
..."

After doing all these horrific things you still act as if you were the defenseless ones. Not only that, you audaciously refer to me whenever I speak of these events. There will never be 'peace' in Cyprus because of your arrogance, deceit and because of your an incredible available capacity to absorb nationalistic, romantic, irredentist propaganda, which has no relation whatsoever with the true events.
