you may not have got the axle spacers back on right so your wheel is not centered & is rubbing 1 pad your caliper will only move a little to center itself, or your caliper piston might be corroded on the out side & hanging up in the same place it set with your old thin pads. are you sure you got the pads in right?

One problem:
Crud builds up underneath the piston seal.
The seal then puts additional force on the piston, preventing it from returning.
Remove the piston and seal.
If either is damaged in any way, replace it.
Scoring or rust pitting on the piston - cracked area "anywhere" on the seal.
With a pick or whatever, scrape clean the groove that the seal rests in.
Another problem:
May need to have the master cylinder rebuilt (or replaced).
Sometimes the master cylinder piston seal won't allow fluid to return.

You installed the shoes incorrectly the way it sounds you don't state if your speaking of disc. or drums.

Disc. make sure ur pad guides are properly on the caliber housing guide if not you will hear what you describe as hell.

Drums. make sure you have installed the shoes correctly and that your pistion caliber guide is accepting the top shoe guide dead nuts center. If not you will hear the hell again
