What happens if you're in a state that allows you to grow medically then you get caught by feds? Does the state protect you at all since you're allowed to grow there under state laws or do they simply do not matter when it comes to the federal laws?

the bush administration has stated on several occasions that federal drug laws supersede all state laws and have prosecuted growers in california (which has medical MJ laws).

No, protection from the state, just hope that they don't charge you with intent to distribute, this carries LONG jail terms and large fines as well as being a federal felony conviction..
