In a rush this morning I was emptying my car from the night before and set our Windex bottle on the wood stairs. 12 hours later I discovered the bottle had leaked, and there is now a "ring" on the stairs. It almost looks discolored on part of it, that may be from the blue of the Windex.

But what can I do, help...

It definitley is the color of the windex, as I checked it this morning. It now looks pretty dry. The windex actually took some of the finish off. I think we're going to have to sand/stain/seal again. But thanks for all the input! Not a fun discovery to make and such a horrible mistake ... especially when we've only owned the house for 2.5 months! :(

Take Steel wool and work the area affected.Lightly rubbing with the grain of the wood. Once the spot is gone use Min Wax Polyurethane on the step. You can get it with stain mixed in it already. Apply with a fine horse hair brush and allow to dry over night. Apply a second coat and allow it to dry overnight.

If the discoloration is 'hazy', or foggy looking, then youve just got some moisture trapped in the finish. Just take a hair dryer to it. Set the hair dryer to the low heat setting, and move it gently back and forth over the blemish. This will heat up the finish enough to help the excess moisture evaporate, and will not damage the wood or finish. (As long as you don't let the dryer continue to blow on just one spot, keep it moving)

I always recommend trying the hair dryer before doing any kind of sanding or stripping of a finish. I've lost count of how many pieces of furniture I've saved this way, hehehe.

Now -- if the stain is actually the color of the Windex - then you're going to have to refinish the tread. That means stripping or sanding the old finish off (use a belt sander to take the 'bulk' off, and a random orbital to finish sand). Possibly, a bleaching solution would help, but you've got to be careful with these, and neutralize the solution. Then trying to match the original stain, seal it, and put a top coat on it. If you've never done any woodworking (furniture, trim, etc) then you may want to hire a professional. This is not something you can just snap out -- there are a lot of variables to work with. It gets even more fun when you're trying to match an existing finish, as opposed to just putting on a new finish. Whatever you do, has to match the rest of the wood, hehehe.

Good Luck
