I have recently been looking at Land Rovers on Craigslist. I noticed the later 90s models are ranging from 3 to 6 thousand. I was just curious as to why these upper class luxury vehicles have such a value loss in ten years? is there major mechanical problems in these models?

land rovers are junk they leak are gutless and electricity still mystifies the brits. luxury vehicles are supposed to get you there and back, not strand you in resume speed on a snowy/rainy night .as for off road capability the only safe place for one of these to go "4 wheeling" is the ditch out in front of the local yacht club much to the owners embarrassment he had to be pulled out by [you guessed it ] a old Jeep cj5.

It all depends on the land rover you choose as to reliabiliy..
a 1990s range rover, land rover discovery or free lander you have to be lucky to find one thats been well maintained. contrary to popular belief they are not the most unreliable. This was a miss information campain by the american auto indusrt which also tried to say that all landrovers tip over when cornering at speed.. The american auto industry also said the same thing about tMercedes suvs. Mercedes hit back showing that the Ford explorer and ford suvs tiped over at lower speeds and that during the testing the none USA vehs were diven and cornered at higher speeds.
Ok now for a few real facts.... Land rover freelanders have a major problem with the valve cover.. basically its made of hardened plastic... it warps and caiused major problems...
Landrover petrol engines ... the timing chain and belts are prone to breaking as is the star wheel on which the chain runs.. shatters... this is also true some .
Ok so whats good about landrovers... well if you stear way from the range rover free lander and discoveries you will be fine.
The landrover 90 and 110 are the only ones you should consider. they are built to last... they have bolt on pody parts and the engines are very easily maintained. Built for the army and farmers in the uk they are made so that the engine can be maintained easily... its so easy to replace water pumps, oil pumps alternator etc. But always choose a diesel engine they are so hard wearing and dont worry if the engine has been replaced with a perkins diesel...... one rule of thumb landrover petrol engine is a no no...

Land Rover is actually a simple car, built with the intention for cross country and easy to maintain. Just because it is accepted by the UK Armed Forces, in the late 50s and follow up by many of Commonwealth countries armed forces make it popular to others. It met the requirements during that time.

In today standard, just can't understand why it is still in the upper class luxury cateory. A basic Suzuki Vitara or a Mitsubishi Pajaro can perform better in both military and x-country role than all models of Landrover,

Mechanically it is lousy and spares are expensive

British Leyland to BMW to Ford and Now Minhindra?in just the last decade. So actually what engine does your Rover have? Brand loyality was shot in the foot. Ten years from now "do you remember when Range Rover was british"? Kind of sad like Lotus being bought out by Proton.

Land rovers are some of the most unreliable vehicles on the road today and they cost an outrageous amount of money to fix - so even though they are premium luxury vehicles they depreciate rapidly b/c of this inherent unreliability.
