Dyeing of Textiles with Natural Materials

To Discover: What is the "fastness" to washing of various dyes with various fabrics, mordanted or not.

Dyes: Turmeric and saffron from the spice section of a foodstore. Onions with brown skins. Peel the skins from a lot of onions and boil them in water. Also fresh berries, if you look up and find that any are good for dyes.

Mordant: Burroughs Solution from a drug store. This is two packets, one of aluminum sulfate, the other calcium acetate. Dissolve in water when ready to use. The equation is 2Al3+ + 3SO4= + 3Ca2+ + 6C2H3O2- ===> 3CaSO4(s) + 2Al3+ + 6C2H3O2-. You're interested in having a fresh solution of Al3+.

Textiles: Buy samples of cotton, wool, silk, polyester, acrylic, and nylon from a "sewing shop." Be sure to get the single fabrics, not blends.

Experiment: Cut out swatches of each textile. Soak half of all types in Burroughs solution, the others in water. Let dry. Wet all swatches with water, then put in dye solution (turmeric and saffron; logwood, if you can find any). Let dry. Hand wash each swatch in Ivory soap solution and let dry. Repeat the washing over several days and keep a record of the fading of the dye according to textile type, mordanted or not, and number of washings and dryings.
