When I'm in the mood for light, airy ambient sounds to soothe me, I listen to , oh, Pantera or Nine Inch Nails. They've both got a catchy rhythmic beat, nothing you'd want to dance to, mind you, just a little sound to escape by.

Trust me, you don't want to know what I listen to for serious music.

No, seriously, I am moved most by quiet. The street I live on dead-ends at the James River, about 5 miles from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay / Atlantic Ocean. I like going there at night when, I swear, the 'noise' of the tide rising and falling is the dominant sound.

I love when I go on a retreat to a certain place in the countryside. I lie down under a tree, with a book I usually end up not reading. This is because I love the gentle sound of the breezes blowing through the tall trees, gently shaking all the leaves in a soft, rustling manner.

The sound comes a few seconds before I feel the breeze, but it is wonderful for meditation — it actually brings on a meditative state, even if you weren't planning it. I cannot help but feel at peace with the world.
