The Pizza Palace found some pre-inflation menus. An 8" pizza was only $0.85 and a medium pizza was $1.15. The equation for this quadratic function is p = d2 - 3d + 45

Suppose the menu listed a "Colossal pizza" for $6.00. What would the diameter of that pizza be?

Just plug p=600 into the equation and solve for d
600 = d^2 - 3d + 45
d^2 - 3d - 555=0
d= 25.11
so probably 25" to the closest inch.

first substatute 8 inches into the equation to find that when d is in inches you get an answer p= 85 in cents. so set the equation equal to 600 cents for 6 dollars.

set p=600

600=d^2-3d+45
d^2-3d+45-600=0
d^2-3d-555=0
using the quadratic to get a real and imaginary answer.
d =~ 25 inch
since negative lengths don't exist in real life then the positive answer makes sense.
