Well, you could ask them - that's the easiest and most polite way to find out.

If you're not able to ask them, looking at their last names is a good way to tell - Chan, Chang, Chin, etc are common Chinese last names; Kim is the most common Korean last name; Japanese last names like Nakamura or Yamada usually follow a spelling pattern of a consonant followed by a vowel, in pairs.

If you are at all familiar with the languages, you can tell by listening to them speak (although English is the first and sometimes only language of many Asian-Americans).

With a lot of practice and exposure to Asian people, you can sometimes tell just by looking at their face, just as you can guess the difference between British and German and French, etc.

I don't think there's a set in stone way to do so. They are all of the same race. I can usually tell by the accent, but I'm not always right. Unless you are an Asian person, I don't think you would know.

This has puzzled me for years. Its funny how they may get upset when you're wrong. I don't get pissed when someone assumes I'm Swedesh when in fact I'm German.
