... what do people think is the best play written about her life (including French ones that may be performed in an English translation)?

(I will only consider going weather permitting of course as I don't drive and am reliant on public transport - unless I go by horse!).

I can understand your difficulties of mobility .
Today their is so little straight theatre and that is what you enjoy , do try to go . Bernard Shaw was a great playwrite and I'm sure seeing any of his plays performed by a good cast will be uplifting and memorable . I have not actually seen Saint Joan ; but years ago at drama school ; I was directed in Shakespeare plays by Ellen O'malley 86 ; for whom Shaw wrote the play . I remember during rehearsal Juliette , Samantha Eggar didn't flit nymphlike across the stage . Ellen O'malley called out from the Auditorium , " No dear , No !!! Where upon she staggered up the steps onto the stage ; then to our amazement , showed how a young girl should move , gracefully and light as a feather .

No.

If you just want to see stuff about Joan of Arc, your best bets are two movies: Carl Theodor Dreyer's 'The Passion of Joan of Arc' and Robert Bresson's 'The Trial of Joan of Arc'. I have a soft spot for Luc Besson's 'Joan of Arc: The Messenger' but that could be because I have a soft spot for Milla Jovovich. I hear that Jacques Rivette's two films about her are also great, but they're about six hours long in total and I haven't seen them.

Shaw's play is not really about Joan. It's an excuse for Shaw to show off, like all his plays. Save your money. There are no other good plays on the subject that I know of.

Yeah I reckon you should. I never got round to seeing a production of this a few years ago with Imogen Stubbs so I may just pop over to see this one.

And mmm, don't know which is the best play written about her life, but quite liked the Otto Preminger film with Jean Seberg.

This is not a bad play, but long!. The Lark is preferred by many as a play about Joan.

i think of GBS became being somewhat harsh right here. Feeling anger and hate for a guy or woman who went out of their thank you to intimidate you seems a typical human reaction. you may hardly prefer to love and adore them could you. possibly hate is in simple terms too sturdy a word, dislike could be extra suited. Having those thoughts could hardly make you a coward searching for revenge. GBS is conversing from the vantage factor of an somewhat useful, sensible and helpful guy or woman. no longer each and every person has such success. IMHO.

no matter how much a hate g b shaw any play is worth seeing. the whole play is more about shaw knocking the english than it is about st joan, "what an englishman believes..." "if the english..." "how can what an englishman believes.." "no englishman is ever beaten.." and so on ad infinitum.

How old is the horse?

Providing you get there, it really is quite a good play. It never was the most cheerful of subjects. It does not matter who wrote any of them, she really did not have a very good time of it.

But, then, maybe you won't mind.
