It can get pretty chilly in the evenings in September up there, so take "layers" that you can add or subtract - weather is unpredictable by then. Hiking boots if you're a hiker, if not, take really comfy shoes with good soles [impact bounce, right?] because the good stuff is off the walkways. However, if a little wooden trail has signs along it saying "Don't Step Off This Trail", they know what they're talking about...the geysers slumber part of the time but are treacherously unpredictable. They are also HOT-pots! Early-early in the morning is when the really great critters are out & about...also at dusk. Take binoculars so you can see a moose have lunch...and a telephoto capacity as to cameras too. Take a windcheater type light jacket for sudden showers [the kind you can roll up in a backpack or daypack]. Take a birdwatcher guidebook too, you're going to see some amazing stuff up there. If you're camping out, mind what the rangers say about food-storage...there is no such thing as a Cute Bear when it comes to food. Mind what the rangers say about the other critters, too...they are all gloriously adorable, but they are w-i-l-d and you need to keep your distance...that's what the binocs & camera are for.

Definitely a camera and good pair of shoes if you plan on hiking. You can get a park map when you enter the park and they have plenty on info at the ranger stations and visitor centers. Bring a good pair of binoculars, as many of the animals are quite far away. If you ever see people in the side of the road with spotting scope, stop. They know what there doing and probably have a wolf or grizzly spotted. September should be really good for the elk rut up around Mammoth. Make sure you ask other park visitors about where to see wildlife, because the rangers tend to not give the best info in order to not create traffic jams. It is an awesome place and you will have a great time.
