I thought Mongoloid was descendents from Mongolia or Asia. Why do people refer to people with Down Syndrome as a Mongoloid? Is it because they have Asian-looking eyes?

People from Mongolia are Mongolians. And the others who responded are correct, Mongoloid referred to what appeared to be asian features. It is inappropriate to use that term now.

You're exactly right. The distinctive shape of the eyes does resemble Asian features--so the term "mongoloid" was coined to describe them. The name (despite the association) has never actually been used to refer to peopleof Asian descent. The term is generally no longer used.

This is probably where the term "mongoloid" emanated from. Yes, I would assume the eyes reflect a more Oriental look. Peace and God Bless.

Yes that is why that term was given to them. It was used so often in the past that I have heard people innocently saying Mongoloid w/o realizing what an offensive term it is.

That's a term we havent used for many years. I think it probably was because of the slanted eyes. We call my son's girlfriends sister Daisy and dont refer to her as any classification. She is actually the joy of my life. She was diagnosed with Down's Syndrome.

Only very racist and intolerate people say that because of their Asian looking eyes.

That was exactly why they used the term. It's outdated now, as you probably know.
